Some of my earliest memories include daydreams of being an artist. My parents gave me many opportunities to foster that daydream. These experiences stand out as bold defining marks on the canvas of my art journey. I remember my elementary art teachers (they were always my favorite). I remember drawing with crayons and knowing my favorite Crayola color was violet-blue. I remember that art class was the only class where my friends and I could get out of our desks and all sit at the same table. I remember recreational art centers with huge hallways and galleries and clay and paint. I remember a babysitter who bought us paper and paints and then showed us how to paint a Minnesota waterfall. I remember knowing that I wanted to always do this, and that I would never give up. I attended college at University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL. During college I was commissioned to paint my first few watercolors. After I graduated from college in 1995, I decided to move to New York City to pursue the arts. Through 1997 I worked as a custom artist, pottery/clay teacher, and studio manager at Our Name is Mud (formerly Mud, Sweat, and Tears East) on the upper east side of Manhattan. In 1997 I decided to move to Nashville and open Paint Life Grand a pottery studio in my home. I taught private pottery wheel lessons and sold my work at Nashville art festivals. In 1998 I accepted a job as an Associate Professor at O'More College of Design in Franklin, TN. where I taught textile design, Design Fundamentals I, and II through 2002. In the summers I also worked as the Assistant Director of O'More College of Design Summer Dreams Design Camp. While building Art Life, I have been working on my own body of work in oils, printmaking, and multi-media/found object pieces.
I invite you to look through some of the pieces on my gallery page, thanks! Juli Schumann Artist/Teacher Art Life Studio Nashville, TN.
